Reiki - Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Reiki come from?
Pronounced Ray-Key, it literally means “Universal Energy”.
It is technique that originated in Japan and has been passed down from teacher to student since Dr Mikao Usui discovered it in the late 19th Century.
Every Reiki practitioner has a lineage that can be traced back to Dr Mikao Usui.
There are many different styles of Reiki because it has evolved as it has grown. As with all therapies, it is best to find a practice and a practitioner that suits you. Click here to learn more about my approach to Reiki.
Is Reiki religious?
Reiki is not founded on religion and assumes all living organisms consist of an energy system (hence “universal”).
Can Reiki work with my religion?
You will find there are mixed opinions on this, which is why I believe it to be a matter of personal preference.
Reiki is requested for the highest good of all and is therefore only applied and used in the best interests of the recipient.
Even though Reiki is not based on religion or personal belief, it can be incorporated in to a session if requested by an individual. For example, some like for Reiki to be requested from God rather than the universal source.
My suggestion to those who are unsure whether Reiki fits in with their religion, is to ask God if Reiki is appropriate for them. The response may be yes, no, or not right now
Will Reiki effect my medical care or other therapies?
Reiki does not replace conventional medicine. It will also work alongside and compliment other therapies.
It is recommended to let your doctor or therapist know that you are receiving Reiki and to discuss any changes that you notice.
Do not stop any medicines or care without consulting your medical doctor first.
Are there any contra-indications?
Reiki is considered a safe practice as there is no manipulation, ingestion or anything applied to the skin. For your safety and your practitioner’s, it is advisable to fully disclose any medical or mental health conditions, so that these can be discussed prior to any session.
Pregnancy – Even though Reiki with pregnancy is widely reported as safe, for peace of mind, it is advisable to receive any complementary therapies only in the 2nd trimester.
